San Francisco, CA : Stolen ambulance chase ends in fiery crash on Treasure Island Tuesday morning, June 7, 2016

Authorities are working to clear the scene of a crash on San Francisco's Treasure Island this morning after a police pursuit of a stolen fire department ambulance ended in a fiery crash.

The vehicle was taken as medical personnel were responding to a medical emergency at the Ambassador Hotel at 55 Mason St. around 8 a.m., according to fire officials and police.

The suspect then drove onto the Bay Bridge, heading east, before exiting at Treasure Island, police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

Officers pursued the suspect, following them onto Treasure Island, Gatpandan said.

The suspect then lost control of the vehicle and crashed on the side of the road, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Officers were able to detain the suspect, according to Gatpandan.

The suspect was not injured during the crash, fire officials said.

California Highway Patrol and Caltrans officials are assisting police with the investigation and have shutdown the eastbound lanes of the Treasure Island off-ramp. The CHP did not provide an estimated time for when the off-ramp would reopen.

The closure is causing traffic on the Bay Bridge, as well as on nearby highways.
