Grady County , OK : Oklahoma Department of Transportation worker killed after vehicle ran into him on Friday ,June 5th 2015

An Oklahoma Department of Transportation worker was killed Friday in Grady County after a vehicle ran into him, officials said.

Gordon Pipkin, a transportation equipment operator, was identified as the man who died. Pipkin was 47-years-old and had been with ODOT since May.

ODOT officials said crews were weed-eating when a vehicle left the roadway and hit Pipkin near the intersection of Highways 17 and 81.

“He loved his family,” Pipkin’s sister-in-law Tammy Garrett said. “He took this job so he could spend more time with his wife.”

Family members on scene of the accident spoke to KOCO 5 spoke openly about the loving husband, father of three and grandfather.

“He loved his family and his church,” said Garrett. “He never missed church even when he was out driving on the road.”

ODOT's Cody Boyd said Pipkin was the 58th employee in the history of the department to be killed in the line of duty.

The investigation into the crash continues. OHP is still trying to figure out what caused a driver to veer off the road and hit Pipkin.

Pipkin was originally from Marlow and was an active member of the Eastside Baptist Church.
