Bunnel ,FL : Palm Coast man charged with DUI in hit-run crash on Tuesday ,July 21st 2015
A Palm Coast man arrested after fleeing the scene of a crash later proved to have blood-alcohol levels nearly three times the legal limit, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
Peter Scherer, 51, of 5 Whittlesey Lane, is charged with driving under the influence with personal injury, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, failure to register a vehicle, driving with suspended license with knowledge, resisting arrest without knowledge and two counts of possession of controlled substance in connection with the incident, according to an arrest report.
A road deputy spotted a black Mazda sports coupe speeding away from a crash at East Hampton Drive and Belle Terre Parkway on July 17, the report states. The officer saw the car cut through the parking lot of a Target store in the Palm Coast Landing plaza, and officers later found Scherer sitting in the vehicle parked behind a pet store in the plaza.
Reports state an officer performed a "takedown maneuver" to handcuff Scherer, who was attempting to walk away as he was being detained. Scherer told deputies he'd consumed, “not a drop of alcohol.” Investigators determined Scherer was involved in the crash, which left one woman with an arm injury.
Records show Scherer's driver's license was revoked at the time for a prior DUI and criminal history reports indicate he has four previous DUI-related convictions.
Scherer took two breathalyzer tests at the Flagler County Detention Facility, registering 0.222 and 0.209 blood-alcohol levels, reports state. The legal limit to drive in Florida is 0.08. He was released from jail after posting bail of $5,500.
