BROOKSVILLE, FL : Brooksville Police officer injured in 6-vehicle crash on May 13th 2014
A Brooksville Police Officer was airlifted to a Pasco County hospital on Tuesday morning after a 6-vehicle crash.
A BPD spokesperson says the crash happened at 8:12 a.m. on Broad Street approaching the intersection with Main Street.
Investigators say Catlin Joseph Nichols worked the overnight shift and fell asleep at the wheel of the 1994 Ford F-150 pickup truck he was driving.
Nichols ran into the rear of a Brooksville Police Department cruiser that was stopped behind four other vehicles at a red light at the intersection.
Brooksville Police Officer Meredith Blackman was driving the cruiser which suffered extensive damage in the initial collision.
The force of the crash caused Blackman's cruiser to hit the car ahead, which caused a chain reaction involving three more vehicles.
Officer Blackman was airlifted to Bayonet Trauma Center and is in stable condition.
Three other people were injured in the crash. All three were treated and released from Brooksville Regional Hospital.
Nichols was charged with careless driving.
