Lenoir, NC : Vehicle crashes into Lenoir church on Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Several people were reportedly trapped and a highway shut down after a vehicle ran into a church in Lenoir Wednesday, according to officials.

The incident happened just after 4:30 p.m. at Gamewell United Methodist Church on the 2800 block of Morganton Boulevard SW, which is NC Hwy 18.

Not many details have been released, but Morganton Communications confirmed that a vehicle "went through the church" and that several people were trapped.

Deputies said one person was taken to the hospital with back pain, and that two others went to the hospital in a personal vehicle. No names have been released.

Power lines were also knocked down during the crash, and the road around the scene was closed in both directions. Drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible.

There is no word on what may have led to the crash or if any charges are being filed.
