Marysville, OH : Three people injured in school bus crash on U.S Route 36 on Wednesday, December 17, 2014
Three people, including a bus driver for the Marysville school district, suffered minor injuries in an accident at the intersection of Collins Road and U.S Route 36, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
No students were on the bus at the time of the accident, which happened at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17.
"The bus was heading to begin the elementary route," Assistant Superintendent Jonathan Langhals said.
State Trooper Kathy Durham was one of the first at the scene.
Durham said the 55-year-old bus driver became ill and blacked out, which caused the bus to go left of center, strike a Ford F-150 pickup truck, hit an embankment and travel through a wire fence before coming to a stop in a grove of trees.
Durham said the bus driver, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana by Liberty Township medics. The bus driver was cited for driving left of center, she said.
The truck driver, a 30-year-old Centerburg man, had minor injuries but declined medical attention, Durham said.
A third vehicle, a Ford Taurus driven by a 41-year-old Springfield woman, rear-ended the pickup truck in an attempt to elude the bus, Durham said. The driver had minor injuries and was transported to Mercy hospital by Marysville EMS.
All three vehicles were inoperable after the accident, according to Durham.
Langhals said when an accident occurs, the district's transportation department sends out alternative transportation or reroutes existing buses in service.
"They were able to execute a plan quickly to ensure the kids were able to get to school on time," he said.
Langhals said the damage to the bus is being evaluated; district policy prohibits vehicles involved in accidents from returning to the road until they are proven safe.
