BARRE, VT : One dead in Barre crash on Friday, February 24th 2017
Law enforcement officials say a suspect in a fatal crash involving a pedestrian Friday evening is in custody.
Police said shortly after 8 p.m., a vehicle veered into the Shell gas station on South Main Street near the intersection of Route 62 and Main Street, striking a man pumping gas and then struck the gas pumps at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, who was identified as a male, pulled over nearby, police said.
The injured man, who witnesses said appeared to be in his 50s, was reported to be severely injured and was transported to Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, where authorities said he died of his injuries.
Soon after, police then detained the individual in the vehicle involved in the crash. The driver was taken into custody. There was no indication Friday evening that criminal charges were being pursued. Police Chief Tim Bombadier did not comment, referring inquiries to the shift commander who was investigating the incident.
Neither the victim nor the driver had been identified at press time.
This is the second fatal accident in Barre this week. On Wednesday, twin sisters were killed on Route 62 at the intersection of Berlin Street when, police said, Shawn Duprey ran a red light and struck their car. Verna Cote and Theresa Martin both died as a result of the accident. Duprey has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including DUI with death resulting.
