Durango,CO : La Plata County Sheriff’s deputy involved in three-car crash on May,Tuesday 29th 2018
A La Plata County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a three-car crash Tuesday evening on Florida Road (County Road 240) northeast of Durango.
The crash was reported at 5:13 p.m. in the 5000 block of Florida Road where a Ford F-550 with a trailer crossed into oncoming traffic by about 2 feet and hit two oncoming vehicles.
Curtis Bewley, 52, of Durango was cited with careless driving causing injury, driving under insurance suspension and violating the terms of an ignition interlock, said Capt. Adrian Driscoll with the Colorado State Patrol in Durango.
Bewley was traveling westbound when he struck a 2011 Hyundai Tucson driven by Holly Ross, 31, of Colorado Springs, who was traveling eastbound. Ross had two children in the car. No injuries were reported.
Behind the Hyundai was a La Plata County Sheriff’s Office vehicle being driven by Shannon Baker, 29, who sustained minor injuries and was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center, Driscoll said. She was treated and released.
“He went into oncoming traffic, kind of sideswiped (the Hyundai Tucson) and then hit (the Sheriff’s Office vehicle) headlight on the driver’s side,” Driscoll said. “We’re still looking at why he was in the wrong lane.”
Drugs and alcohol are not suspected.
A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to an email or phone call Tuesday night seeking more information about the deputy’s rank or whether she was on duty at the time of the crash.
Florida Road was closed briefly while law enforcement removed vehicles from the scene.
