Zephyr Cove, NV : Charges pending after truck driver hit bicyclist in Cave Rock tunnel at Lake Tahoe Thursday morning on July 10, 2014
The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that temporarily shut down a busy highway at Lake Tahoe when a commercial tractor-trailer truck struck and seriously injured a bicyclist passing through the Cave Rock tunnel.
NHP Trooper Dave Gibson said Friday charges are pending, but didn't elaborate. He said the truck driver is cooperating and neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been a factor in Thursday morning's accident.
Investigators say 48-year-old Clarence Aldridge of Bakersfield, California was bicycling eastbound through the tunnel on U.S. Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove when he was struck from behind by a 2004 Kenworth driven by 39-year-old Richard Pettay of Carson City.
Aldridge said he didn't see the bike in the darkened tunnel.
Pettay was taken to a Reno hospital with serious injuries.
