Wendell, ID : No one injured in a crash involving a school bus in Gooding County on Thursday morning, May 5, 2016

A school bus carrying 16 elementary school students was involved in a crash Thursday morning south of Wendell but nobody was injured.

The crash happened about 7:10 a.m. at 1800 E. 3500 S. when a Wendell School District bus reversed and backed over a 2001 Honda Civic, Idaho State Police said in a statement.

Theresa Kelley, 41, of Wendell was driving the bus and was wearing her seat belt, and she and the 16 students were uninjured, ISP said. Terri Fisher, 47, of Buhl was driving the Civic, was wearing her seat belt and was also uninjured.

Kelley was cited for unsafe backing, an ISP sergeant said.

“It’s a real blessing nobody was hurt,” said Greg Lowe, superintendent for the Wendell School District.

Lowe had a trip to Boise planned Thursday but met with Kelley and the district’s bus supervisor before leaving.

“Law enforcement was immediately involved, the bus supervisor was immediately involved, and the parents were contacted as soon as possible so they knew exactly what happened,” Lowe said.

The superintendent said it’s yet to be determined if Kelley will be disciplined and that she’s never caused a problem before.

“I can say she’s a very good driver with a wonderful record,” Lowe said.

He added that in 12 years, he can remember only one other incident with a school bus — it was just a fender-bender — and Thursday’s incident will serve as a good reminder of safety as the bus supervisor works with bus drivers.
