Bow, WA : 22-year-old man died following rollover crash near Lake Samish on Saturday, July 23, 2016

A 22-year-old man died at a hospital Tuesday evening, July 26, from injuries he suffered following a rollover crash near Lake Samish.

Nathan Anthony Mationg, of Bow, was ejected from a maroon 1999 Jeep Cherokee around 10:05 a.m. Saturday, July 23, as the vehicle crashed off a road south of the lake, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Mationg was unresponsive at the scene, and he never recovered. He died around 5 p.m. Tuesday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to the state patrol.

Two other people in the Jeep were hurt. Lacey Jane Breckenridge, 25, of Bow, suffered a broken arm and possible internal injuries, said Sgt. Mark Francis. She was treated in Skagit County but later transferred to Harborview, a hospital spokeswoman said. Victor A. Martinez, 21, also of Bow, was treated and released at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Troopers continue to investigate who was driving. The Jeep had been headed west in the 300 block of Lake Samish Road, toward the south end of the lake, when it crossed the eastbound lane at high speed. As the vehicle crashed it rolled with such force it left gouges in the asphalt, before hitting a wire fence and coming to a rest on its roof, Francis said.

No one was wearing a seat belt, according to the state patrol.

Breckenridge and Martinez had climbed out of the car by the time troopers arrived. They gave conflicting stories about who was behind the wheel, and troopers believe it was either Mationg or Breckenridge. So far the evidence suggests Martinez sat in the back seat, Francis said.

A warrant was granted to draw Breckenridge’s blood. Investigators will look at the evidence – the nature of the injuries, blood transfer, clothing fibers in the seats – before deciding whether charges will be filed against her.

Substances in the Jeep tested positive for cocaine and heroin, Francis said. Blood tests will show whether drugs factored into the crash. Often those tests take weeks to complete.
