Lincoln, NE : A North Platte woman died in a crash on Sunday, June 4, 2017
A North Platte woman died in the early hours Sunday morning when the car she was riding in ran into some horses on the highway about 17 miles south of North Platte.
Dawn Tallmon, 46, was taken to Great Plains Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she was pronounced dead, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.
At 3:53 a.m. Sunday, a passerby called 911 to report five horses loose on U.S. Highway 83 near the intersection of Echo School Road, about 17 miles south of North Platte, the sheriff's office said.
A deputy arrived within 15 minutes, and found about 30 horses running all over the highway, the sheriff’s office said. As the deputy started to herd the horses off the road, a northbound 2006 Chevrolet Aveo, a hatchback, crested a hill and ran into three of the animals.
The owners were also trying to herd the horses off the road, a sheriff's spokesman said.
The driver was Shawn Tallmon, 49. He had three passengers -- wife Dawn, 46; son Randy, 19, and Emily Pellegrin, 18 -- all of North Platte.
The other three occupants suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to Great Plains Health for treatment.
The car did not roll, a sheriff’s spokesman said. Neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the wreck, at least pending further investigation, which is continuing.
