Zamora, CA : Two people killed in fiery, wrong-way crash on I-5 in Yolo County on Tuesday, March 1, 2016
Two people were killed in a fiery, head-on crash caused by one of the drivers going the wrong direction on Interstate 5 in Yolo County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers first received reports of a wrong-way driver just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday heading north on the southbound side of I-5 near the town of Zamora, the CHP said.
Minutes later, officers received a report of a vehicle fire on the south side of I-5, just south of the Interstate 505 offramp.
A 2014 Ford F-150, driven by a 30-year-old Hollister man, was traveling south at about 90 mph and didn't see the 1991 Honda Accord, driven by a 29-year-old man from El Nido, going the wrong direction on the interstate, officers said.
The vehicles crashed head on, sending the F-150 onto the right shoulder where it caught fire. The Accord stopped in the center divide, the CHP said.
One CHP officer said the scene "looked like an explosion" as debris was scattered across both lanes and onto the shoulder of the road.
All of I-5 south was closed until nearly 5 a.m. while officers investigated the crash and Caltrans cleared the debris.
The identities of the drivers have not been released.
No passengers were inside either vehicle.
