DES MOINES, IA : One person has died in a serious crash on Highway 5 on Sunday, December, 3rd 2017

Iowa State Patrol officials have confirmed one person has died in a serious crash on Highway 5 near Highway 65/69.

The crash was reported around 7:45 a.m., with three vehicles involved.

Trooper Alex Dinkla told KCCI a pickup truck was going eastbound and crossed over the median into the westbound lane and hit a Sweet Honey tanker truck. He said the pickup truck was split in half on impact. The third vehicle involved in the crash was a sanitation truck that ran over debris.

Iowa State Patrol officials confirmed one dead in the crash, and said no other serious injuries were reported.

Officials closed Highway 5 in both directions for several hours.
