Newnan, GA : Two people killed in Sharpsburg car wreck on Saturday, July 29, 2017
Authorities are investigating a two-car accident that left two people dead.
Shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday, emergency crews were called to the scene of an accident at the intersection of Hwy. 34 and Hwy. 54 in Sharpsburg. According to Sgt. Katie Thompson with the Georgia State Patrol, a black Infiniti was traveling westbound on Hwy. 54 when he allegedly ran a stop light and collided with a Ford Escape attempting to turn left into the movie theatre parking lot. After arriving on scene, authorities found the Infiniti on fire while the Escape had two patients trapped inside, according to Commander Bryan Fuller with Coweta County Fire Rescue.
Personnel at the scene confirmed both occupants inside the Escape were deceased. The driver of the Infiniti, a 28-year-old male from Acworth, escaped the burning car. He was examined by medical personnel and agreed to be transported to Atlanta Medical Center for further evaluation.
According to Thompson, the driver of the Infiniti admitted to speeding at the time. The Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is still investigating the crash and further details will be available at a later time.
Hwy. 34 West was closed for several hours while the scene was being investigated.
The names and ages of the deceased have not been released at this time.
