Kahala, HI : Motorcyclist died in wrong way fatal crash on the H-1 Freeway on Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Honolulu police say speed and alcohol were factors in a wrong way crash on the H-1 Freeway that killed a motorcyclist.

The 31-year-old Kalihi man was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes when he collided head-on with an SUV around 1:30 a.m.

Investigators say he was not wearing a helmet. The impact threw his body onto the other side of the freeway where he was run over by a car. The driver was going at a slow speed, police said, and thought the body was a pile of clothes in the roadway.

It's unclear how long the motorcyclist was riding the wrong way.

"We did get a call for hazardous driver about five minutes prior to the collision," says Lt. Carlene Lau of the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Unit.

The 53-year-old woman in the SUV had minor injuries. She was treated by Emergency Medical Services and then transported to the hospital.

All lanes were closed for about three hours while HPD investigated.

This is the 27th fatality on Oahu roadways compared to 28 the same time last year. This is also the sixth motorcycle death compared with three from last year.
