Maine State Police say a fatal motorcycle crash in Lebanon brings the motorcyclist death toll to 27 so far this year.

Police say 26-year-old Matthew Goodwin, of Somersworth, New Hampshire, was not wearing a helmet when he skidded on Lower Cross Road and crashed into trees and rocks at 10:40 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities believe speed and lack of familiarity with the road may have been factors.

Saturday night's crash occurred 4 miles from the site of another fatal motorcycle accident in Lebanon last weekend.

The 27 fatal motorcycle accidents in the state so far this year mark a significant increase over 11 fatalities for all of 2014.
