Marine Killed In Truck Crash Identified
Military authorities Sunday released the identity of a Marine who died in truck accident at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.A Marine major identified the victim as Lance Cpl. Gomez, from Southern California.Maj. Todd Sudmeyer said he would not release any other details about Gomez, including his first name, "in order to respect the family's grieving process."
A member of the 4th Tank Battalion, Gomez was killed and 19 other Marines with the unit were injured when a 7-ton truck overturned about 3:25 a.m. Saturday during a routine training exercise, military officials said.
Eight Marines are now out of area hospitals after being treated for various injuries, while 11 remain hospitalized, Sudmeyer said.
All of their families have been notified, said Sudmeyer, who would not release any names Sunday.
"We've made command visits to the Marines," Sudmeyer said. "Some of the injuries are very serious, but we expect all will make a full recovery."
The loss was the 27th training-related death at San Diego County bases since 2004.On Jan. 26, a Navy Seahawk helicopter crashed into the ocean about 50 miles off Camp Pendleton, killing the two pilots and two crew members.
