LAKELAND, FL : Man killed on scooter in US 98 N. crash identified on Friday, 6th April 2018
Northbound U.S. 98 N. was closed near the intersection of Thomas Road on Friday afternoon because of a fatal crash, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Carrie Horstman.
About 4:30 p.m. Friday, Willard Miller, 69, of Snowy Plover Drive in Lakeland, was driving his orange three-wheeled mobility scooter along the median break on US 98 N. near Thomas Road when he suddenly accelerated east across US 98 North toward Thomas Road, according to witnesses and evidence. At least two drivers had to take evasive actions to avoid striking him, but a third vehicle, a silver Toyota Cruiser being driven by James McNamara, 53, of Zephyrhills, was unable to avoid striking Miller. McNamara and other motorists stopped to to render aid, but Miller was declared dead at the scene.
McNamara was wearing a seat belt and no charges are pending.
The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit set up traffic cones blocking northbound traffic at West Socrum Loop Road, but had opened the roadway to traffic in the evening.
