Stamford, CT : New Jersey man killed in crash on Merritt Parkway in Westport on Wednesday, January 11th 2017
A New Jersey man died in a rollover crash on the Merritt Parkway Wednesday near the Norwalk-Westport town line.
Robert G. Bearden, 76, of Florham Park, N.J., was pronounced dead at the Norwalk Hospital after being transported there by Westport EMS, according to a statement from the Connecticut State Police.
The accident occurred around noon next to the Exit 41 ramp on the southbound side of the parkway in Westport, and blocked the left lane for about 90 minutes.
Bearden was the driver and sole occupant of his 2008 Toyota Camry, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The car left the road and struck a large tree, turning over and coming to rest on it’s roof, police said. They were investigating the reason Bearden lost control of the vehicle.
It was the second fatal crash in the same stretch of the Merritt in less than three weeks. A Stamford woman was killed and one man was injured on Dec. 21, when her car veered off the parkway and rolled onto its roof near exit 41.
According to the accident report in that December crash, 51-year-old Lisa C. Brown was driving north shortly after 10 p.m. when her 2004 Lexus GS 300 left the roadway near Twin Oaks Lane, which is about a quarter-mile before exit 41.
