Munster, IN : Head-on crash shuts down U.S. 20 on Monday, 21st May 2018
A crash involving a pickup truck and a semi tractor on Monday afternoon shut down U.S. 20 in both directions for around an hour in the area of 84 Lumber in Pine Township, just west of LaPorte County Line Road.
Porter County police responded around 4 p.m. to the crash and according to their investigation, a 2004 Chevy Silverado, driven by Michael Novotney, 67, of Michigan City, was traveling westbound on U.S. 20 when he crossed the center line for unknown reasons.
Police said Novotney drove into the path of an eastbound semi tractor driven by Thomas Smigielski, 59, of South Bend.
According to police, the Silverado struck the semi tractor head on, causing Novotney to be entrapped and needing to be extricated by fire personnel. Once extricated, police said Novotney was transported to Franciscan Health Michigan City for a complaint of pain to his upper leg and hip.
Police said Smigielski had a complaint of pain to his shoulder.
Police said all lanes of U.S. 20 were reopened as of 4:20 p.m.
