Saint Augustine, FL : Bicyclist critically injured in crash on U.S. 1 on Wednesday, September 27th 2017

A bicyclist was flown to Orange Park Medical Center Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a car while riding along U.S. 1.

Rodney Val Scheuerman, 51, was listed as critically injuredfollowing the crash that happened just after 3 p.m. near Island Landing Drive, north of the Northeast Florida Regional Airport.

A report from Florida Highway Patrol said Scheuerman was riding in the southbound travel lanes when he made a left turn to cross the northbound lanes as he approached Island Landing Drive and was struck by a northbound Ford Flex driven by 69-year-old Leonard Wayne Friend, of St. Augustine.

The crash shut down one lane of northbound traffic during the evening commute as Highway Patrol investigated.

Friend sustained minor injuries, the report said.
