Sterling Heights ,MI : Motorcyclist dies in crash on Sunday ,July 26th 2015
Sterling Heights, Michigan
A Richmond man is expected to be charged with drunken driving causing death for a crash late Sunday in Sterling Heights that killed a motorcyclist.
Police said the 21-year-old man driving a 2001 GMC Yukon collided with the motorcyclist who was waiting at a red traffic signal on northbound Mound Road near Catalpa Drive, south of M-59, police said.
“It appears he did not make attempts to stop. There were no skid marks,” Lt. Dave Smith said.
Sterling Heights firefighters and Universal-Macomb Ambulance personnel treated the victim -- identified as a 44-year-old man from Shelby Township – but he died at the scene. Police did not disclose his name pending notification of relatives.
The driver of the Yukon and the man riding the black 2012 Harley Davidson were traveling alone at the time of the crash.
Investigators are trying to confirm sketchy reports that the driver of the sport-utility vehicle initially fled the accident scene but returned. He was taken into custody without a struggle and remained jailed Monday morning in the Sterling Height police lockup, pending an arraignment.
Smith said speeding does not appear to be a factor in the incident, but officials suspect the SUV driver was drunk.
Northbound Mound was closed from north of Catalpa to south of Dobry Drive from 10:30 p.m. Sunday to 3:30 a.m. Monday as police investigated the incident.
