Provo, UT : Teens survive rollover crash south of Sundance on Saturday, 15th October 2016
Six teenagers traveling from Sundance Mountain Resort to their homecoming dance survived a crash where their pickup rolled into the North Fork Provo River on Saturday.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper said the three couples had been dining at the resort and left at about 8:30 p.m. They were heading southbound on State Route 92 when the driver veered off the road to the right and struck the soft shoulder.
The vehicle caught the shoulder and rolled into the river where it came to rest in ankle-deep water. In photos released by UHP, the pickup appears to be on its side in the river.
All occupants, all 17 years old except for a 16-year-old girl, were wearing their seatbelts, which Hopper said helped prevent injuries. A female was transported to the hospital with a slight concussion, but there were no other injuries.
“It’s great that it was teenagers that took the time to put their seatbelts on,” he said.
In addition to the message of wearing seatbelts, Hopper emphasized the importance of obeying speed limits and staying in the lane of travel.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the incident. The posted speed limit is 35 mph.
