Kent, WA : Driver seriously injured after multiple-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 in Federal Way on Monday, Oct 5, 2015
A wreck on northbound Interstate 5 in Federal Way blocked traffic for a couple of hours Monday.
It happened shortly before 2 p.m. near South 300th Street.
A southbound car crossed the median and hit an SUV, ripping the car in half and trapping the rear half of the car under the SUV, South King Fire & Rescue spokesman Jeff Bellinghausen said.
The man driving the car was “extremely seriously injured,” and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Bellinghausen said.
It wasn’t clear what caused the wreck.
Washington State Patrol trooper Chris Webb said it appeared five vehicles were involved. There were some minor accidents around the serious wreck, he said. No one else was seriously injured.
Backups on northbound I-5 were extending into Fife within an hour of the wreck. Southbound backups were reaching into SeaTac.
The northbound lanes were cleared by about 4 p.m.
