PIERPONT TOWNSHIP, OH : Two dead in State Route 6 crash on Thursday, 22nd March 2018
An Ashtabula County coroner's investigator has confirmed the drivers of a pickup truck and semi-truck died when their vehicles collided Thursday evening near the border of Pierpont and Richmond townships.
Initial reports came in at about 7:30 p.m. Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatchers said the crash occurred near the intersection of state routes 6 and 7.
Coroner's investigator Rich Mongell said investigators suspect the semi-truck was traveling southbound along State Route 6 when the driver of the pickup truck pulled out in front of it. The semi-truck flipped and the pickup truck caught fire.
The vehicles' drivers were the only occupants, Mongell said. Neither were Ashtabula County residents, he said. The semi-truck driver is from New York, and the pickup truck driver is from Columbiana County.
Responders transported both decedents to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies. One of the decedents will need to be identified through DNA testing, Mongell said.
State Route 7 was closed during the investigation and remained closed as of 10:30 p.m. Thursday night.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the county coroner's office will continue to investigate, Mongell said.
