New Brunswick, New Jersey
Four soldiers are hurt after a serious crash on the New Jersey Turnpike involving a military vehicle.
WPVI reported that three of the four injured soldiers are males and that one soldier, a female, lost part of a leg. The three men were trapped for a time under the Humvee.
The New Jersey police tweeted that one man and one woman were in critical condition and one other was in serious condition. A fourth arrived at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, long after the others.
A medical helicopter landed in the southbound lanes not long after the accident to take one of the patients to the hospital. Traffic in those lanes backed up for miles and took hours to start moving again.
The four soldiers are with the Army Reserves and are stationed at Fort Totten in Queens, NY, Shaun Morris, a public affairs officer with the Army Reserves at Fort Dix, told myCentralJersey.com.
NBC New York reported that the Humvee overturned as it was heading south near East Brunswick. The green Humvee rolled and landed upside-down, a twisted wreck. It came to rest wheels-up on the side of the road, one wheel missing. Michael Watsey, an eyewitness, tweeted that a tire "broke off" the truck. WPVI said the tire was about 40 feet from the overturned vehicle.
WPVI said the Humvee was part of a two-vehicle caravan. The other vehicle, a truck, was not involved. Those inside the truck stopped and rushed to help the victims.
Fire trucks, ambulances and multiple rescue workers flooded the scene.Traffic was moving again as of about 5 p.m. ET..
