Pinellas County, FL : Wrong-way driver fleeing officer crashes on I-275 in St. Petersburg on Monday, December 29, 2014

A wrong way driver slammed into two cars after driving on the wrong lanes of I-275.

St. Petersburg police say at around 5:50 p.m. Monday, a deputy attempted to stop a gray Chrysler rental car that was driving recklessly on 54th Avenue North near I-275.

The driver was 29-year-old Michael Anderson and his passenger was 19-year-old Caila Mazyck.

As the deputy tried to pull the Chrysler over, Anderson sped off and traveled south on the northbound lanes of I-275. The deputy did not pursue.

An off-duty St. Petersburg police officer spotted the car while driving on I-275. The officer tried to stop the Chrysler, but Anderson drove directly at him. The officer had to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Anderson then attempted to exit I-275 by driving the wrong way on the northbound ramp at 38th Avenue. But he slammed into two cars.
Anderson and Mazyck then exited the cars and tried to run away but they were soon caught. One of the victims was taken by ambulance to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The other victim, Hannah Steinfors, had minor injuries to her wrist.

She told News Channel 8 that she was sitting at a red light and didn't realize what hit her.

"I was just at the stop light, didn't see anything, I was just listening to my music and it just hit me, that's why it was so scary, you know? You didn't get to prepare for it," said Steinfors.

Anderson and Mazyck did not suffer any significant injuries from the crash.

Anderson was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding by the PCSO and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer by SPPD. Mazyck had an outstanding traffic warrant and narcotics were found in the car so additional charges on both are pending.
