A 14-year-old girl was killed in an early-morning hit-and-run accident Tuesday on U.S. Highway 17-92 in Orange City, according to an Orange City Police Department spokesman.
Officers responded to a report of a young girl in the road at around 2:10 a.m., according to Lt. Jason Sampsell of the OCPD. The responding officers attempted CPR until fire and rescue personnel arrived, who pronounced the girl deceased.
The girl had a skateboard and other miscellaneous property, Sampsell said.
At about 2:24 a.m., law enforcement received a call in reference to a vehicle “that may have hit an animal,” Sampsell added.
Upon further investigation, the driver, identified as 30-year-old Walter J. Gunther, admitted he was driving the van with a suspended driver’s license, according to Sampsell.
Gunther was placed under arrest at the Orange City Police Department without incident following an interview.
He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving on a suspended license. He remained at the jail as of noon Tuesday.
