Deland, FL : Two DeLeon Springs men killed in head-on collision in West Volusia on Saturday, May 28, 2016
Two men from DeLeon Springs were killed when the cars they were in collided head-on over the weekend, Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Kim Montes said Sunday.
Eliverio Piedra Ruvalcaba, 73, and Michael Jungwirth, 67, were killed in the accident that happened about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 17 and Lingering Lane, Montes said.
Ruvalcaba was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes in his 1999 Chrysler along U.S. 17 in West Volusia, when he struck the 2002 Honda CRV that Jungwirth was a passenger in head-on. The CRV was traveling in the correct direction in the northbound lanes, Montes said.
The CRV's driver, Logan Reif Jungwirth, 22, also of DeLeon Springs, was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with critical injuries, Montes said.
Montes said the reason why Ruvalcaba was traveling in the wrong lane was unknown, and the crash remains under investigation.
