Queen Anne, MD : Three people dead in head-on crash involving tractor-trailers on Route 404 in Talbot County on Tuesday morning, April 21, 2015

Maryland State Police said three people were killed Tuesday morning when three tractor-trailers collided on the Eastern Shore.

Shortly before 7 a.m., Brian Hutcheson, 38, of Ramer, Tennessee, was driving a tractor-trailer west on Route 404 in the area of Church Lane, Talbot County, when the vehicle crossed the yellow line, police said.

The truck sideswiped another tractor-trailer, police said, before it struck a third tractor-trailer head-on. The 52-year-old driver of the third tractor-trailer was identified as Terry Coward of Culpepper, Virginia.

After the second collision, both vehicles came to a rest on the eastbound side of the road and one of the trucks burst into flames, becoming fully engulfed, police said. Firefighters and paramedics immediately responded to the scene.

Two drivers, Hutcheson and Coward, and Danielle Mumford, 24, a passenger in Hutcheson's tractor-trailer, died from their injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer that was sideswiped was not injured, police said.

Hutcheson and Mumford, of Delmar, Delaware, were travelling with a pet dog that also died in the crash.

Due to the severity of the crash, Route 404 from Route 50 to Church Lane was closed until 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Department of the Environment responded to address the spill of diesel fuel, police said. K-9 unit was called to the scene to search the area for additional victims.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
