Midland,MI : Midland man sentenced for fatal auto crash on September, Monday 20th 2017

Despite arguing about faulty brakes and being the sole custodian of his 8-year-old son, a 28-year-old Midland man was sentenced Monday to 90 days in jail and one-year probation in connection with a Nov. 14 fatal crash that killed a 20-year-old Beaverton waitress.
Corey Draves was originally charged with a moving violation causing death and later pleaded no contest to reckless driving. Gladwin County 80th District Court Judge Joshua Farrell sentenced Draves to 90 days in jail with 65 days suspended. Draves will serve his 25 days on weekends.
Draves' attorney Louis Willford argued that Draves was driving a work truck and the brakes were spongy and pushed all the way to the floorboard.
Gladwin County Prosecutor Aaron Miller rebutted with the length of the skidmarks, saying that if there were no brakes, there would have been no skidmarks.
Willford also said that Draves was sole custodian of his 8-year-old son and that Draves had a new job and it would be horrible if he lost it because of the sentence. Yet, Miller said the reality is that Draves got behind the wheel of a vehicle and didn't make sure it was in good working order and he killed someone.
Annmarie Strunk, of Arenac County, was northbound on M-30 near Highwood Road in her 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix at 12:27 p.m. when Draves, who was driving a 2008 Dodge Sprinter van, was southbound and crossed the center line to avoid colliding with vehicles stopped waiting to turn, according to Gladwin County Sheriff investigators. Draves suffered injuries. His passenger, a 60-year-old Beaverton man, was not injured. All three were wearing seatbelts.
Michigan State Police and Gladwin Fire and EMS assisted with the crash.
Strunk was a waitress at the Beaverton Family Diner. According to court records, Strunk adored her 6-year-old nephew and valued her mother as her best friend.
