Terre Haute, IN: Impaired driver arrested after crashing car with 3 children passengers in US- 41 on Friday night, 14th November 2014
A late night crash led to the arrest of a woman driving under the influence of alcohol with three children yesterday.
Jakita Brown, 26, of Terre Haute, was booked into the Vigo County Jail and preliminarily charged with one count of Operating While Intoxicated with passengers under 18, felony; three counts of neglect of a dependent, felony; three counts of Operating While Intoxicated-Endangerment, misdemeanor; and various traffic citations which included child restraint violation and no valid driver’s license.
According to Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts, preliminary investigation revealed a white GMC pickup, driven by Renee Whitby, 47, of Duschore, Pa, was stopped westbound on Hulman Street at US 41 (3rd Street) for a red light at 11:45 p.m.The GMC was then struck in the rear by a 2004 Hyundai SUV, driven by Brown. The impact forced the GMC onto US 41. No injuries were reported at the scene.
“During the crash investigation, Trooper Jonathan Cumbie noticed Brown appeared to smell of alcohol and display classic signs of intoxication. Brown failed roadside field sobriety tests and later failed a breath test for intoxication by testing .248 percent,” Watts said, noting the legal limit for intoxication is .08 percent in Indiana.
Brown had three children passengers in the car with her at the time of the two-vehicle collision, ages seven, five, and one-month. Reportedly, only one of the children appeared to be properly restrained in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The three children were released to their father after being medically evaluated by Terre Haute Fire Department EMS
