A 5-year-old Cape Coral boy was killed this morning in a crash that closed southbound lanes on Interstate 75 in Dade City for about an hour.
Nathan Griffith was killed as he and his family were returning from a family vacation in Tennessee, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP said 22-year-old Caitlin Marie Grace, of Dade City, was driving a 2014 Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed southbound in the outside lane on I-75, south of Blanton Road, just after 9:30 a.m. when she attempted to pass a 2002 Chevrolet Impala driven by the boy’s father, 27-year-old Alexander W. Griffith.
Griffith had his hazard lights on and driving at about 60 mph in the outside due to mechanical issues with the car.
Grace attempted to pass the Impala, but struck it from behind in an active construction zone, the FHP said.
The impact caused the Impala to overturn onto the outside grass shoulder, while Grace’s car came to a stop on the grass shoulder, the FHP said.
The boy, who was in a booster seat, was pronounced dead at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the FHP said.
Griffith and two other passengers in the Impala are being treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the FHP said. Griffith suffered minor injuries, while his wife, Sheila A. Griffith, 27, is in serious condition and their daughter, 7-year-old girl Marissa Griffity, suffered minor injuries.
