Huntington,CT : Connecticut man charged in fatal DUI crash in Hunterdon County on December, Tuesday 26th 2017

A Connecticut man has been charged with vehicular homicide and drunk driving following an alcohol-fueled three-car crash that claimed the life of a New Jersey man.

Joe Holmes, 57, of Willimantic, Conn., faces charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless driving after he rear-ended 57-year-old Wilson Sumbana, of South Bound Brook, on Tuesday along state Highway 202.

Holmes was behind the wheel of a Chevy pickup around 4 p.m. when he collided with Sumbana, who was driving a Volkswagen GTI in the northbound lane of the highway. Another vehicle was struck during the crash but everyone in that car escaped injury.

Sumbana was taken to Hunterdon Medical Center where he was pronounced dead following the crash, which was probed by investigators from the State Police’s fatal accident unit. Holmes, who was uninjured in the crash, is being held at the Somerset County jail.

Prosecutors didn’t release details about the circumstances of the crash, including Holmes’ blood-alcohol level, as it remains under investigation.

Prosecutor Anthony Kearns extended condolences to Sumbana’s family in a news release and warned drivers to be aware of their surroundings on the road, during the holidays.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Readington Township Police Department at 908-534-4035 or the Hunterdon County
