A Riverside man has died after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle late Monday night.
According to East Providence police, the man was struck just before 11 p.m. by an SUV that was turning at the intersection of Willett and Arrowhead Avenues.
Police said the victim, identified Tuedsay as 21-year-old Ethan Simpson, suffered significant head injuries and was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to police.“It is a tragedy,” Lt. Raymond Blinn said. “It’s our understanding that the parents were close by when this happened and our thoughts and prayers are with them for their loss.”
The driver, who police said is a middle-aged female, stopped at the scene of the crash and was interviewed by police. It is not clear if she will if she will face any charges and police said an investigation is ongoing.
Police and neighbors said the intersection where the crash occurred is well lit. One neighbor said she heard the commotion and was surprised to hear Simpson had died.
“It was a little bit before 11 and I hear the ‘wah, wah’ sound and it was an ambulance coming down this street so I looked out the window and there’s just cops and police and fire trucks,” neighbor Ashley LaSalle said. “At night it’s very quiet so I was very surprised to hear that. I don’t know how somebody couldn’t see anybody on a bike.”
