Richardton, N.D : 21-year-old driver dead, two injured following a crash on Interstate 94 near Richardton on Sunday morning, March 22, 2015
One man is dead and two others are injured after icy roads near the eastern Stark County line caused three accidents early Sunday and shut down a portion of Interstate 94.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Freightliner truck traveling east on I-94 about 6 miles east of Richardton stopped in the passing lane after another truck had stopped on the shoulder because of icy road conditions.
At 3:39 a.m., a 2014 Toyota Camry driven by Cameron Byrd, 21, of Duncanville, Texas, rear-ended the stopped Freightliner, with both vehicles coming to a rest in the passing lane.
The driver of the Toyota died at the scene, while two passengers, Braden Phillips, 20, of Baker City, Ore., and Marcus White, 19, of Coconut Creek, Fla., were injured and taken to CHI St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson.
The semi driver, 51-year-old Peter Antwi of Calgary, Alberta, was uninjured.
The Highway Patrol said another semi on I-94 swerved to miss the first crash, striking the rear of the truck that was stopped on the shoulder, while a pickup swerved to miss the crashes and rolled into the ditch. No one was injured in those other accidents.
The eastbound lane of I-94 was closed because the road was blocked after the accidents, according to a news release. Eastbound traffic was detoured to nearby roads until the interstate was reopened at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
