Le Grand, CA : Three people died in a crash involving two cars on Highway 99 near Le Grand on Wednesday morning, March 8, 2017
Three people died in a crash involving two cars on Highway 99 near Le Grand on Wednesday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
About 7:30 a.m., a gold Chevrolet Silverado was headed south on Highway 99 south of the Mission Avenue exit at an unknown speed when it crossed the center divider into the northbound lanes, Officer Eric Zuniga said.
The Silverado collided head-on with a Black Ford SUV in the northbound lanes. The Silverado’s two occupants and the Ford’s driver, alone in the vehicle, died at the scene, Zuniga said.
The cause of the crash remained unclear Wednesday afternoon.
The driver of the Silverado was a man in his 50s from Modesto. His passenger was a woman in her 50s from Modesto. Their identities were not released pending notification of next of kin.
The Merced County Coroner’s Office identified the driver of the Explorer as 23-year-old Travis Lindsay from Chowchilla.
“We’ve been in contact with (Stanislaus) and, so far, attempts to reach relatives have been unsuccessful,” Merced County Undersheriff Jason Goins said late Wednesday afternoon.
California Department of Transportation assisted CHP with road closures, which snarled northbound traffic for several hours with just one lane open. The roadway was reopened by 11 a.m.
