Lorain, OH : Two drivers dead following head-on crash in Wellington Township on Sunday, February 12th 2017
A fatal vehicle crash Feb. 12 in Wellington Township claimed the lives of both drivers involved, according to a media release from the Ohio Highway Patrol’s Elyria Post.
Mark D. Horton, a Sheffield Township resident and former Elyria firefighter, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash around 1:28 p.m. on state Route 58, south of Jones Road, the release said.
Horton, 64, was headed south on Route 58 in a red 2014 Dodge Caravan when he was struck, according to the release.
Cody M. Wallace, 21, of Clark Road in New London, was headed north on Route 58 in a beige 2016 Ford Fusion when he traveled left of center, the release said. Wallace was also pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
Both Wallace and Horton were trapped in their vehicles upon arrival of first responders, the release said. Horton was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, but Wallace was not wearing his seat belt.
Drug and phone use by Wallace are suspected factors in the crash, according to the release.
The crash remains under investigation.
