Crash on I-26 kills Kingsport woman, 4-year-old boy

A 4-year-old boy who was critically injured in a crash on I-26 that killed the driver of the car in which he was riding Wednesday has died of his injuries.

According to a news release from the Kingsport Police Department, the child, whose identity is being withheld because of his age, was transported from the scene of the wreck to Holston Valley. From there, he was taken by helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

The KPD says it was notified by the Knox County Coroner’s Office Wednesday afternoon that the child was pronounced dead at about 4 p.m., within 15 minutes of his arrival at UT.
The wreck occurred at about 12:45 p.m. in the westbound lane at mile marker 1.4.

Police say a westbound Honda Civic sedan driven by Terri Temple, 30, Kingsport, with a child in the back seat, veered off the left side of the road for unknown reasons. When Temple tried to get the car back on the road, she over corrected and sent the vehicle into a spin.

The Honda crashed into a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze which was stopped on the right shoulder of the roadway. The driver, Paul Laycock, Elton, Wis., had pulled over to manipulate the vehicle’s GPS system.

Temple sustained fatal injuries during the crash. Laycock was not injured.One lane of traffic on westbound I-26 was temporarily closed for about an hour.
