BUTLER TWP, PA : Stranded driver rescued 12 hours after crash in Luzerne Co. on Saturday, December 17th 2016

An early morning crash left a motorist stranded for about 12 hours on Saturday in Butler Township, Luzerne County.

Brian Smith, 52, was driving north on Interstate 81 around 8 a.m. near mile marker 149 near West Hazleton, when he lost control of his 2001 Dodge Durango due to icy road conditions, crossing the center median and both southbound lanes before becoming airborne and striking the ground at the bottom of an embankment, according to a Pennsylvania State Police press release.

At about 3:30 p.m., family members went to the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Hazleton, and reported Smith missing.

The police "pinged," Smith's phone, determining its approximate location.

According to police, at about 7 p.m., they located the vehicle in which Smith was trapped.

Smith was alert while fire and EMS personnel extracted him from the vehicle.

He was transported to the hospital with multiple injuries.

Also assisting at the scene were Valley Regional Fire Department, Sugarloaf Fire Department, Hazle Township Fire Departments and PennDOT.
