Drunk Driver Sentenced for Crash that Killed Woman

Justice has been finally served for a woman killed when celebrating her 21st birthday on the Las Vegas Strip.
Edris Ghani was sentenced Monday to serve as many as 20 years in prison for getting behind the wheel drunk and crashing into a car killing the woman and severely injuring her mother.

The crash happened three years ago. The mother of Christina Konarski gave chilling testimony Monday that helped put Ghani behind bars. Konarski remembers the details of her night out with her daughter up until the crash happened.
There was hardly a dry eye in the packed courtroom. Konarski showed how her life changed when Ghani crashed into their car leaving her with a paralyzed arm dead daughter. The night was supposed to be a mother-daughter bonding night for Christina's 21st birthday. It would be the young woman's first time experiencing the Las Vegas Strip.
"She smiled every time she was carded at the blackjack table," Cynthia said.

She remembers the two of them leaving the MGM Grand around 4 a.m. It was also the same time Ghani took to the road. Ghani, along with a passenger, was drunk and driving to their hotel. He was estimated to be driving 70 miles per hour on Tropicana Avenue.

The Konarski's were at a stoplight. It was the last thing Cynthia remembers. She couldn't remember how their car ended up wrapped around a light pole.
After Monday's sentencing, Konarski returned to the scene of the deadly crash. She was accompanied by a Metro Police detective who responded to crash.

"Do you think I was conscious?" Cynthia Konarski asks Detective Karl Tomaso. "No, no, you had no control of your vehicle because the impact was so severe." Tomaso told her.
Ghani was sentenced to prison for a minimum of five years with a maximum of 20 years. Konarski was hoping for a harsher penalty."He got a slap on the wrist," she said. "He went out of the country recently to say goodbye to friends. I didn't get to say goodbye."

For the past three years, Cynthia has shared her story every time Ghani had a hearing. Now, she can rest knowing her diligence helped put away her daughter's killer.
One of the reasons this case took so long to close was that the offender hired defense attorney Steve Wolfson. Once Wolfson became the district attorney, there was a conflict of interest. The Nevada Supreme Court decided a special prosecutor should take the case.
