A Caldwell man died and a Middleton man was hospitalized early Sunday morning as the result of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 near Caldwell, according to Idaho State Police.
Ricardo N. Sanchez, 37, died at the scene of the crash, on the westbound side of I-84 at milepost 31, in what turned into a multi-vehicle crash. Sanchez struck the median guardrail with his 2000 Plymouth Neon, which he exited after it came to a stop, partially blocking the left lane, shortly before 2 a.m.
James E. Harrell, 48, of Middleton, stopped his pickup truck on the right shoulder to assist Sanchez, when additional automobiles crashed, hitting both men, according to the ISP release.
On Monday evening, a hospital spokesperson at St. Alphonsus in Boise said Harrell was still in critical condition.
Deacon S. Baker, 22, of Meridian, swerved his 2004 Toyota Corolla to avoid Sanchez's vehicle and sideswiped an unknown vehicle, causing him to crash into the median guardrail. A 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Jessica R. Echiribel, 20, of Middleton, also swerved to avoid Sanchez's vehicle and lost control.
The crash remains under investigation.
