Police have identified the 84-year-old man who was killed in a single-car crash on Rice Road near Covered Bridge Lane Friday morning as Howard S. Richter of Wayland.
The accident remains under investigation and Rice Road is closed at Covered Bridge Lane to facilitate the accident reconstruction team, police said.
Around 10:08 a.m. Friday, Richter's car lost control and crashed into a tree, according to police. Police are looking into the possibility that a medical problem could have led to the crash.
The man was taken by medical rescue helicopter to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The Fire Department took the driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, to the Cochituate ballfield with what emergency workers described on emergency radio reports as a fractured skull. The man was unconscious when firefighters arrived and it took them about eight minutes to get the man out of the car.
