Wilmington, DE : Motorcyclist killed in Del. 1 crash north of Milford on Thursday, March 23rd 2017
A 29-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash Thursday on southbound Del. 1, north of Milford, state police said.
The crash, involving a tractor-trailer and a motorcycle, occurred about 11:18 a.m. on southbound Bay Road (Del. 1), said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier, a state police spokesman.
David E. Thompson, 29, of Dover, was operating a 2005 Honda CBR southbound on Bay Road (U.S. 113/Del. 1) just north of Tub Mill Pond Road.
Anthony L. Howard, 35, of Parkville, Maryland, who was driving a 2016 Western Star Tractor pulling a car hauler northbound on Bay Road, had stopped in a cross-over to turn left into the I.G. Burton car dealership parking lot, at 605 Bay Road, Fournier said.
The car hauler began to cross the southbound lanes of Bay Road when Thompson tried to brake and lost control of his motorcycle, striking the front of the trailer portion of the hauler, Fournier said. The truck continued westbound 19 feet before coming to a controlled stop, he said.
Thompson, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Howard, who was properly restrained, was uninjured in the crash, Fournier said.
The state police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this incident. Neither drug use nor alcohol use by either operator was suspected, Fournier said.
Bay Road southbound at exit 79 (Thompsonville Road) was closed for about three and a half hours.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Master Cpl. B. Killen at (302) 698-8451.
