Longview, WA : Driver causes three-car collision, narrowly misses parked car with kids on Friday, 26th August, 2016
A driver caused a three-car collision on Seventh Avenue near the Douglas Street intersection Friday afternoon, narrowly missing a car parked on the side of the road that contained two kids and a baby.
A man driving a beige Ford van ran his vehicle into a Chevy pickup parked on the side of the road, flew about 10 feet into the air, landed and slid on its side at about 3 p.m. on Friday. The parked pickup hit a Dodge Intrepid parked in front of it.
“My hair stood up in the back of my head because I know the kids are always out there at this time,” said Felix Quitugua, who owns the Chevy pickup that was hit by the driver. “This area’s bad. They need to put a speed camera out there. Look at these kids.”
The driver had minor injuries, was arrested and will be booked into the Cowlitz County Jail. There were no other injuries. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
Rawndi Ashton, 27, was on her way to go fishing in her car when the van hit the pickup, just one vehicle away. Ashton’s car contained her 6-year-old, 4-year-old and her baby. Ashton had run into the house because she forgot the keys.
“We were sitting down, we were getting ready to go fishing. It just went running,” said Ashton’s 6-year-old son, Cyrus Ashton-Rodriguez.
“I thought ‘my kids are completely done,’” Ashton said.
Ashton said her mother’s car, the Intrepid parked behind Ashton’s car, was totaled. Her mother doesn’t have car insurance and doesn’t know how she will pay for the repairs.
The van was towed about 3:30 p.m. Friday.
