Hedgesville, West Virginia
West Virginia State Police have identified two people killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Hammonds Mill Road as Kevin Lee Smith, 44, and Kevin Lee Smith Jr., 21, both of Hedgesville.
The father and his adult son were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported at 5:18 a.m. on the 1000 block of Hammonds Mill Road. A person in another vehicle, Calvin L. Hartley of Hedgesville, was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., for treatment, police said.
Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Manny Arvon said Kevin Smith was employed as a custodian for the school system for many years and was currently assigned to Martinsburg South Middle School.
Arvon said his wife works as a cook at Spring Mills Primary School and other relatives also work for the school system, Arvon said.
"Our hearts are broken — that family touches many areas of our district," Arvon said.
The GMC pickup that the Smiths were in was off the west side of the road with heavy front end damage, police said. Hartley's vehicle, a Dodge pickup, was on its driver's side about 250 feet north of the GMC, police said.
The Smiths were traveling southbound when the GMC crossed the center line and collided head-on with Hartley's northbound truck, police said.
The police news release did not give the ages of the Smiths. The investigation was ongoing, police said.
