Toutle, WA : 17-year-old Oregon teen died after motorcycle collided with a water truck at a motocross track in southwest Washington on Saturday afternoon, March 7, 2015
One teen was killed and his friend was hurt when their motorcycles crashed into a water truck on the track in Washington Saturday afternoon.
"I knew with him going into motocross that people get hurt...but this was unbelievable," Dylan Bunnell's mother told KATU.
17-Year-old Dylan Bunnell and a friend were on the Riverdale Raceway motocross track Saturday. The track is three miles East of Toutle, Wash. Bunnell was practicing for a Sunday event. The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office says they did not realize the course was temporarily closed when they were on the track.
A water truck was out on the track spraying the dirt down to keep any dust from being kicked up by riders. Deputies say the friends did not see the truck on the other side of a large hill. As they rode over the hill they collided with the truck. Dylan Bunnell died at the scene. His friend was not seriously hurt.
Both teens were wearing protective gear at the time of the crash. The parents and families of the friend were at the track when the accident happened.
"I feel like he would’ve still been here today had they been doing what they are supposed to be doing," Dylan's sister, Ashlie Bunnell told KATU.
"There was no sign saying the track was closed, it was word of mouth," Dylan's sister said.
The Riverdale Raceway owner told KATU what happened was an accident. He refused to answer additional questions about the circumstances.
The water truck driver was not harmed during the incident.
"We don’t want this to happen to anybody else," Ashlie Bunnell said.
The teen killed has been identified as Dylan Bunnell, 17, of Mulino, Oregon. His friend, Anthony Hamilton Jr., 14,of Dundee, Ore., was taken to the hospital for his injuries by Castle Rock Fire.
