Milwaukee, WI : Man killed in stolen SUV crash at 19th and Olive streets on Monday night, January 18, 2016
The driver of a stolen SUV was killed in a crash Monday night at 19th and Olive streets, police said. Two teenage girls in the SUV were seriously injured.
Investigators said the 2008 Honda CRV was taken in an armed robbery on Jan. 15.
Milwaukee police said they pursued the vehicle Monday evening, but they called off the chase when the driver got on Interstate 43 the wrong way at Locust Street.
According to police, at 8:49 p.m. the driver was speeding west on West Olive Street when it tried to pass another car, lost control and hit a tree.
Officers were not pursuing the SUV at the time of the crash.
John Randle lives a few houses away. He said knowing the SUV was stolen is part of a bigger problem with some of Milwaukee’s youth.
“Get a job. Get an education. Get your money and pay for it. You want it bad enough, do what it takes to get it,” Randle said.
Witness Mosa Foster said too many lives are being lost to crime.
“They have to go knock on some mother's door and say, 'Your child is dead, riding in some stolen car.' That's not news we want to hear,” Foster said.
The driver, 19-year-old Ginvanni Cole, was pronounced dead on the scene. Two girls, 15 and 16, who were also in the SUV were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police said the two teens remain hospitalized.
Investigators said they found a firearm in the vehicle.
No one in the other car was injured.
