An 18-year-old Sterling woman is dead and two other people were injured after she failed to come to a stop at the intersection of state Route 26 and Henry Road on Tuesday afternoon and collided with an oncoming vehicle, the Ogle County Sheriff's Department said in a news release Wednesday.
Stevie Thomas was westbound on Henry around 4 p.m., failed to stop and was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Klint Singley, 42, of Polo, the release said.Thomas had to be extricated and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 16-year-old passenger, a Dixon girl who was not identified, and Singley were taken to KSB Hospital in Dixon with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.
The crash is under investigation. No further information was released.
KSB does not provide information on patient conditions.
Although the release said Thomas is from Sterling, her Facebook page says she is from Rock Falls, and Sauk Valley Media archives indicate that she was living in Rock Falls as recently as June.
Among others, Thomas is survived by her brother, Devin Jacob, and sister Danielle Grennan, both of Rock Falls. Her mother, Bonnie Jacob, 52, of Rock Falls, died of cancer on June 4, and a brother, Ryne Thomas, 21, died in 2006.
